What are plates?
A plate is a device which fits around the top teeth, bottom teeth or sometimes both. These plates can be used to modify the growth or improve the position of the teeth and jaws, create space in the jaw to correct narrowness and lack of room for adult teeth, hold space open for the eruption of adult teeth or correct bite issues (i.e. crossbite, underbite or overbite).Functional orthopaedic appliances work with the patient’s growth to correct functional issues and hence are very effective when used early enough. In a lot of cases, use of these appliances can eliminate the need for a surgical correction later on in life.Dr Shimanto can advice if the use of a plate is right for you or your child.
